South Carolina Talking Book Services is a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page, or a reading disability.
To obtain services, individuals and institutions must submit an application form (PDF). The form must be submitted with the signature of a certifying authority. We only accept fully completed emailed, mailed, faxed, or scanned applications. Certifying authorities include, but are not limited to - medical doctors, optometrists, registered nurses, rehabilitation teachers, librarians, or licensed social workers.
Applications may also be obtained from local public libraries or by calling the South Carolina State Library at (800) 922-7818 or (803) 734-4611 (in Columbia). We contact applicants by phone when completed applications are received.
For individuals who wish to apply, please complete the Individual Talking Book Services Application.
For institutions who wish to apply, please complete the Institutional Application (Schools, Nursing & Medical Facilities).
For individuals who are incarcerated in correctional facilities and wish to apply, please complete the application for Individuals in Correctional Facilities.
For schools serving students, please complete the Annual Student Listing Form for Schools. The names and contact information of each student will be put on file with your institution’s information and will not be disclosed to anyone. Only students with qualifying conditions can use the TBS equipment on loan to your institution.
